1. What is the dress code at Colonial Downs?
General Admission: No dress code, but do not wear obscene or offensive clothing
Jockey Club: No dress code, but do not wear obscene or offensive clothing. Many people choose to wear business casual to formal within this area.
Turf Club/Sky Suites: Required proper attire includes business casual clothes, dress walking shorts, dress slacks, dresses and suits; gentlemen's jackets are optional. Absolutely no jeans, torn clothing, tank tops, flip-flops or abbreviated dress permitted.
2. Can I bring outside food and coolers into Colonial Downs?
No, unless Colonial Downs has an event specifically advertising allowing outside food and drinks (outside alcohol never allowed) such as the Virginia Derby "Picnic on the Turn".
3. What time does Colonial Downs Racetrack open?
We open 1 hour to first race post time for that day. On Friday, Monday and Tuesday afternoon, simulcasting is available in the backstretch restaurant beginning at noon.
4. How long do the races last?
We generally present 9 horse races each race day. It takes about 4 hours to run that number of races.
5. Can I bring my camera into Colonial Downs and if so, where can I take pictures of the horses?
Yes, cameras are more than welcome within the track. You may take photos anywhere that your admission will allow you to go (ie: General Admission, you may get as close as the fence by the track).
6. Are children welcome at Colonial Downs?
Yes, Colonial Downs promotes a family environment. Kids 12 and under are FREE. However, state law prohibits minors taking part in any betting.
7. Can I place a bet using my Credit/Debit Card?
No. Betting is Cash Only. We do have ATMs located around the building in case you need it, but to save the hassle be sure to bring cash.
8. Can I purchase food using my Credit/Debit Card?
Many food vendors do not take Credit/Debit on the 1st floor (General Admission). In dining areas like the Jockey Club, Sky Suites and Turf Club you may use your Credit/Debit Card to pay your tab. We do have ATMs located around the building in case you need them, but to save the hassle be sure to bring cash.
9. I placed a winning bet but took the ticket home and never cashed it in. What do I do? Is it still good?
Yes it is still good. You may cash your voucher or use it for another bet in the future at any of our 8 OTBs or at the track within 180 days of purchasing the ticket. If you do not plan on coming back, you may send the winning ticket to Colonial Downs with a self addressed stamped envelope to:
